Pihepe are also known as Pitt Island Sheep and originate from Saxony Merinos, being sent from the Chatham Islands to the Pitt Islands in 1841. There they thrived in the challenging environment, now the Beattie family run a flock of 2500 on Banks Peninsula and continue to breed them through natural selection and organically.
